Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, 21st February 2011
The neighbour's chimney fell down in one big piece. Ours is still standing and considering how tall it is, I have no idea why it didn't fall down.
Our living room. The bookshelf at left did not fall down last time. The left speaker is probably stuffed as it's face down on a stone hearth. I don't have the heart to pick it up and look just yet. I'd only recently finished the amplifiers hence the temporary stands.
A room that I currently use as an office. The CD shelving in the foreground, face down. My slide books fell off their shelf. The bottle of Galliano is intact.
The street outside our house. It looks like a water main has burst, but no... it's all water from liquefaction.
Damage to the ceiling in our kitchen/dining area. Most likely caused by bricks falling down from the chimney that partially collapsed in September.
See how the road has raised above the kerb.
The footpath has sunk a bit.
Damage to the footpath. The apex would be about a foot high. You can see road damage in the background. You can also see big cracks in the retaining wall on the opposite side of the road.
Damage to the road. It's sticking up maybe 6 inches.
The river, looking downstream from the back of of our property. The colour is from the silt washed in by liquefaction. It usually only runs this high in rainy weather.
We dug a path through the silt along the line of the gutter so rain won't sheet over the road.
Hard at work, almost finished digging the channel shown above.
The birdbath fell over but the pukekos escaped unharmed.
