| After several months a walkway to Cathedral Square was opened so the public can get a first-hand view of the damage to the Anglican cathedral, as well as the demolition work that's been going on in the surrounding area. The walkway runs from the container mall on Cashel St, shown in the previous photo, along the centre of Colombo St to Cathedral Square. The area outside the fence was being patrolled by security personell in case people were a little too enthusiastic. The rest of the wall around the rose window has since collapsed after the 6.0 shake on December 23rd. Nobody from the general public was in the area on that day as the walkway was only open temporarily for a few weeks. It had been scheduled to reopen just for the day on December 24th as many people would have been able to see it while visiting the city for Christmas, but the reopening was cancelled due to the danger of further seismic activity. | |
